How it all began...
I was 22 years old the first time I asked for money. No deck. No connections. No idea what I was doing.
I was given no training, only one piece of advice: go in with confidence and sincerity. Know your numbers inside and out. Explain exactly what the investment was for. And then—after you ask—stop talking.
That last part was the key.
So I did it. I made my ask—brief, clear, specific. And then I shut up.
She didn’t like it. She hesitated. She talked her way in and out of it. But while she spoke, I listened and after what seemed like an eternity (it wasn’t) I heard her talk herself into it. What I had said made sense. I had connected the dots for her and made it easy for her to say yes.
Still, no one was more surprised than I was. It was exhilarating! And I wanted to do it again, and again. And I did—raising millions of dollars over the next 25 years.
It was only years later that I realized something: most people—especially women—fear asking for money. They fear talking about money at all. And that’s when I made a decision. I wouldn’t gatekeep what I had come to naturally to me. So I spent my career mentoring women on my teams to make fearless asks of their own.
Later, as a startup founder, I began asking for myself—and learned firsthand how difficult, vulnerable, and challenging it can be. That’s how Confident Capital™ was born.
I took my 25 years as a veteran fundraiser, my time in the trenches as a founder, and my passion for helping women lead with courage—and built a program to teach female founders how to raise money with clarity, credibility, and confidence.
